Icelandic Food Comes to London

Wonderful day with food producers from Iceland

Icelandic Food Heroes at London’s Borough Market

If you think Icelandic food is just pickled fish with a heavy taste of salt, vinegar and other preservatives – think again. Yesterday evening the Icelandic Embassy hosted a welcome event for a group of 14 of the Icelandic producers who have travelled to London to show off and sell their products at London’s famous Borough Market for the first time, October 7-10.

We were lucky enough (and you can for the rest of this week) to talk to the people who produce the raw products and make some amazing food products. It was the first time I tasted rainbow trout gently smoked using beech wood, lamb that was so tender and tasted so special because of their diet of angelica from West Iceland, hot-smoked mackerel and marinated herring. Such a range of amazing flavours and textures.

I spent some time speaking with someone who grows their own oats and cereals and makes special flat breads and another producer who grows and makes brittle and preserves out of rhubarb. These people are the heroes of Iceland as they produce some of the healthiest foods in the world in a harsh and unforgiving environment.

They are only in Borough market until Saturday 10th. Come along and speak with these heroes, try their food and buy something special for the weekend. Iceland Traveller will also be there and can help you plan that trip to Iceland, we have just re launched our ‘Iceland for Food Lovers’ tour.
