Make New Year really special with this 5 day break that takes you to some of Iceland’s most famous sights, finishing up a stunning celebration in one of Europe’s best party cities to welcome in 2018.  It’s a varied programme, including the Golden Circle and Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon, and provides an introduction to the country’s restless geology, time to search for the magical Aurora Borealis in remote areas and then back to Reykjavik to celebrate on December 31st with Dinner and dancing, fireworks and bonfires.   Accommodation is in simple, tourist-class hotels and cottages.

DAY 1 (Thursday Dec 28): WELCOME TO ICELAND (50 km)

Transfer by Flybus shuttle from Keflavík International Airport to the Fosshotel Baron (or similar) in Reykjavík for your first night. Depending on your arrival time, we can offer suggestions on how to explore Iceland’s capital on your own. There is plenty to do! (1) golden circle geyserDAY 2 (Friday Dec 29): THE GOLDEN CIRCLE ROUTE (220 km)
At 08:30 meet your tour guide for a short introduction to Icelandic geology and a visit to the Reykjavík Volcano House to watch a short film documenting the eruptions of Eyjafjallajökull and Fimmvörðulháls in 2010, which caused major disruption to international air travel.  You then drive to Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site where the Althing, the oldest legislative assembly in the world, was founded. Thingvellir is geologically significant too, being situated on the tectonic plate boundaries of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.  Then it’s on to the Geysir hot springs area with its bubbling mud pools.  The geyser from which all others take their name is now dormant but, nearby, is Strokkur (“the Churn”), which erupts every few minutes.  Next, you travel to Gullfoss (the “Golden Falls”), one of Iceland’s most beautiful waterfalls.  Your final stop is at the explosion crater Kerið which is filled with water and resembles an ancient amphitheatre. In the evening, your guide will explain about the Northern Lights before you venture outside to search for them.  Your accommodation is in the simple Árhús Cottages in the village of Hella in South Iceland.

jokulsarlon april 07 BP icebergs glacial lagoon south eastA long and worthwhile drive today brings you to the spectacular Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon, filled with floating blue icebergs. If you are lucky, you may even see seals swimming in the Arctic waters. You can also walk on the black sandy beach where large icebergs become stranded. The Vatnajökull National Park, at around 12,000 square kilometres, is the largest in Europe and is home to Iceland’s highest mountains, an alpine environment and Europe’s largest glacier. Tonight there will be a film show about Northern Lights and another chance to search for them in this remote location away from areas of light pollution.  Your accommodation is the Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon (or similar).

DAY 4 (Sunday Dec  31): SOUTH COAST  and NEW YEAR’S EVE (305 km)017Eyjafjallajokull
Today, you head across the Laki lava field to the village of Vík where you can take a stroll on the black lava beach and see the bird cliffs at Reynisfjara. You will pass the Mýrdalsjökull glacier and the infamous Eyjafjallajökull volcano and continue to Skógafoss which, at 60m high, is one of the most impressive waterfalls in the country. Further west you reach the high but narrow Seljalandsfoss waterfall which plunges over the mountain. There’s a trail that goes behind the falls which you can take – if you are prepared to get wet! From there, you return to Reykjavik and to your hotel (City Park Hotel, or similar) to check in and change, ready for the bus to  pick you up to take you to the beautiful glass panelled Harpa Concert Conference centre for a 4 course dinner and views of the harbour and Reykjavik bay. Later in the evening, a bus will take you to see one of the New Year’s Eve bonfires and a short tour of the city, before returning to Harpa for music, sparkling wine, fireworks and a bit of Icelandic craziness! Transfers back to the hotel are available until 2am.

DAY 5 (Mon Jan 1): DEPARTURE (50 km)
