Iceland is one of the best countries in Europe for whale watching, with more than 20 species of whales and dolphins found off its shores. The tour starts from ’s Old Harbour, at the Whale Watching Centre which is located on board an old fishing vessel permanently moored by the pier. Before or after the tour you can watch a multimedia presentation about the whales and other marine life of the area. The whale-watching boats have a café and toilets on board and warm, waterproof overalls are supplied free of charge. Although the tour runs year-round, April to October is the peak season, when minke and humpback whales – along with white-beaked dolphins and harbour porpoises – are most abundant. Occasionally, killer whales (orca) and fin whales are spotted too. Please note that numbers are unpredictable and vary with the availability of food in the coastal waters. A pick-up can be arranged from your hotel for an additional charge.
