Tour Codes: NT2, NT3, NT4
(March – November, daily, 3-4 hours): from £56 (NT2), £78 (NT3), £56 (NT4)
A range of whale and bird watching expeditions are available from the northern town of Húsavík. Among whale species that you might spot are minke, humpback, orca and the blue whale – the largest creature that has ever lived. Birds include Arctic tern, fulmar, guillemot, razorbill and, of course, the puffin.
Your trip could be aboard a traditional oak boat (Code: NT2) or a sailing ship (Code: NT3). Certain departures between May and mid-August (Code: NT4) sail close to “Puffin Island” where thousands of these endearing birds nest and some are aboard the Opal, which uses a unique regenerative, plug-in hybrid propulsion system, making it the first craft in the world to be powered solely by renewable energy. On all trips, the services of a professional guide, warm overalls and refreshments comprising hot chocolate and a cinnamon bun are provided and, on sailing ships, there is the chance to participate in handling the sails. It is possible to combine whale-watching with a 2-hour horse-riding tour. Please ask us for details.
Summer whale-watching is from May to September when several sailings a day are offered. Winter whale-watching is in March, April, October and November when there are one or two trips per day.
