Tour Code: AT01
(May – September, daily, 10 hours weekdays, 7.5 hours Sundays with later departure): from £230
Arriving after your flight from on the volcanic island of Heimaey, (home to 4,500 people and, in summer, around 8 million puffins), in the Westman archipelago off the south coast of Iceland, you will discover that nature has sculpted a fascinating landscape teeming with diverse bird and animal life. On a two-hour guided coach tour you will encounter a volcanic crater, still-warm lava and half-buried houses from the island’s 1973 volcanic eruption. An optional boat tour (approx 90 minutes) takes you around the island, stopping to look at the birdlife and – with luck – whales, and ends by sailing into Klettshellir (Cliff Cave) where a musical instrument is played to showcase the stunning acoustics. If you choose not to take the boat tour, you will have free time to explore the island on your own.
