Just a 20-minute sail from Reykjavik´s city centre lies Viðey Island. Uninhabited since the 1950s and with limited artificial light sources, the island is an ideal location from which to view – and photograph – the Aurora. The island is home to the Imagine Peace Tower, an artwork created by Yoko Ono in memory of her husband, John Lennon. It takes the form of a wishing well from which a tower of light (powered by Iceland’s geothermal energy) emanates and is lit annually between 9 October (Lennon’s birthday) and 8 December (the date on which he died) and at the winter solstice, New Year’s Eve and the spring equinox. Please note: departures for this tour are dependent on sea as well as weather conditions.
