Here there are attractive houses, botanic gardens, a church, pretty streets, harbour, dramatic mountains and in an hour, plenty to capture for your selfie gallery. Leaving Akureyri, stop at Goðafoss waterfall for a range of stunning backdrops and then it’s on to the charming ‘whale’ town of Húsavík where you stay overnight.
DAY 2: TRAVELLING EAST (400 km)
Today begins with a tour of the area around Lake Mývatn, noted for its rich bird life and extraordinary volcanic landscapes, also the location for some of the filming of ‘Game of Thrones’. There’s no shortage of unusual selfie locations today: pseudo craters at Skútustaðir, lava formations of Dimmuborgir, and a selfie-soak for an hour in the geothermally-heated Lake Mývatn Nature Baths. In the afternoon, you explore hot springs and bubbling mud pools before hiking in the magnificent surroundings of Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall. From there, you travel through uninhabited highlands to a short stop in Egilsstaðir, before continuing along scenic roads to your overnight location at the small fishing village of Fáskrúðsfjörður in the East Fjords, where your estimated arrival time is 20:00.
