Iceland is fast becoming a favourite destination for cruise passengers and to see the dramatic and varied coastlines from the surrounding seas is a wonderful experience. Taking the opportunity to explore inland Iceland from the surprising number of ports and harbours on offer is well worth doing, either as part of a small group on a guided minibus tour or in a private group with a bespoke programme.
Shore excursions are available from Heimaey (on the Westman Islands) Seydisfjordur, Husavík, Akureyri, Isafjordur and Grundafjordur, as well as from Reykjavik, where extensions to your cruise are also available. As almost all cruise ships call at Akureyri, we have included two shore excursions here, please contact us to let us know where else your cruise is stopping around Iceland.
Goðafoss Waterfall & Eyjafjörður area (duration 3 hours)
This guided minibus tour is scheduled to coincide with the arrival and departure times of each ship. You will be met at the dockside and will be returned to your ship at least one hour before sailing and will also have free time to spend exploring Akureyri on your own. Private tours are available too, please ask us for details.
Goðafoss, just a 30-minute drive from Akureyri, is considered one of Iceland’s most beautiful waterfalls. It also played a pivotal role in Icelandic history as it was here, in 930 AD, that a heathen chieftain threw statues of the old gods into the water (hence its name) to mark the beginning of Christianity in the country. You will then explore Eyjafjörður fjord and the varied countryside surrounding Akureyri. Also included is a visit to a Christmas house where, even in summer, you can enjoy a festive atmosphere with Santa and his helpers. After the tour, there will be free time in the city centre before you return to your ship.
Available: 1 May – 30 September
Goðafoss, Lake Mývatn, and Nature Baths (duration 8 hours)
Tour code SE10
This longer guided minibus tour is scheduled to coincide with the arrival and departure times of each ship. You will be met at the dockside and will be returned to your ship at least one hour before sailing. Private tours are also available, please ask us for details. On this day tour, the entry fee to the Lake Mývatn Nature Baths is included.
With its unique ecosystem and varied birdlife, Lake Mývatn is one of the most beautiful areas of Iceland. On this excursion, your first stop will be at the spectacular Goðafoss waterfall en route to the lake.
Your tour will also take in mystic Dimmuborgir (“Dark Cities”) – with its lava pillars and strange rock formations that have inspired sagas and folk tales – the warm underground river in the Grjótagjá rift and the geothermal area of Hverir, with its boiling mud pools, steaming fumaroles and sulphur pits. Your last stop will be at the magical Lake Mývatn Nature Baths to enjoy a relaxing soak (bathrobes and towels are available for hire) in a natural pool of geothermally-heated water set amid the lava fields. Please note: the longest walking time on this tour is around 20 minutes across easy terrain. No meals are included but there will be a stop for refreshments at a café or restaurant.
